Wharekai Pēpē Breastfeeding Support was started by Cheryl Ganly-Lewis, an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant), after seeing a strong need for a community based, mother-to-mother breastfeeding support group that provides accurate and timely breastfeeding support to mothers and their families.  Cheryl is assisted by a small group of breastfeeding counsellors – all of whom are breastfeeding mums that have worked with Cheryl to overcome their own breastfeeding difficulties.

In August of 2011 Wharekai Pēpē Charitable Trust was created. By setting Wharekai Pēpē up as trust we are able to apply for funding that will allow us to continue our current support group, as well as start up new groups in other areas.  If you are a business or individual interested in helping by sharing your time, or a donation of funds, please feel free to drop us an email or call us.

The trust’s purpose is to offer support and practical advice to breastfeeding mothers and their families in the community.  We do this through the creation of community breastfeeding support groups for women experiencing breastfeeding problems, which are facilitated by Cheryl and supported by our wonderful group of breastfeeding mothers (AKA breastfeeding counsellors).  The support groups are currently held every Thursday, alternating between Stokes Valley and Upper Hutt.  They are approximately 3 hours in length and are free of charge.

Through these support groups Wharekai Pēpē Charitable Trust seeks to create a social environment that effectively supports the mother-baby breastfeeding dyad.  Our belief is this will facilitate a strong relationship between the mother and baby and thereby enhances their bond.  The knock-on effect being the strengthening of family/Whanau relationships.
